Students and employees of Haywood Community College who may become infected with the AIDS virus or other contagious diseases will not be excluded from enrollment or employment, or restricted in their access to College services or facilities, unless medically-based judgment in individual cases determines that exclusion or restriction is necessary to the welfare of the individual or other members of the College community.

The College complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and makes every effort to insure that handicapped persons admitted to the College as students or employed by the College are afforded all of the rights and privileges provided to them by this act.

Persons who know, or have reasonable basis for believing that they are infected are expected to seek expert advice about their health circumstances and are obligated ethically and legally to conduct themselves responsibly in accordance with such knowledge for the protection of others.

Persons who know that they are infected should immediately share that information with the appropriate administrator. Students should contact the Vice President of Student Services and employees should contact the President, so that the College can respond appropriately to their needs. Such information will be disclosed to responsible College officials only on a strictly limited, need-toknow basis unless the individual consents in writing to other releases of the information. Certain excerpts of this material were taken verbatim from the “Response of the University of North Carolina to the AIDS Epidemic,” and from policy statements adopted by other educational institutions in the State of North Carolina.
