The HCC Volunteers Club is a student-initiated, service-oriented club open to everyone.  The mission of the Volunteers Club is to make a positive difference to the public and environment by leading by example using “Leave No Trace” as our motto.”  We are unique in several ways.  We are the first school-sponsored club in eastern America with a direct link to the National Park Service.  The VIP coordinator for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park uses our club as a model program to encourage other schools to develop similar programs.  Another unique feature of our club is that our membership is open to all curriculum programs as well as any interested faculty and staff.

The club has been in existence for three years.  Although activities in the past have mostly consisted of trail maintenance in the Cataloochee Valley area of the park, this year we plan to expand into the community with our efforts.  The Volunteers Club is honored to have been asked to provide guidance and leadership with students in the new Early College.  Hopefully we can help them, not only with service projects, but with writing their constitution, purpose, and mission statement. We will share information that we hope will help them be successful.

Our previous work has led to many other volunteer opportunities, such as the “Fire-Ring Rehabilitation” at Big Creek, the “Heavy-Metal” carry-out from Cosby Knob, landscaping an area at Central Elementary, and providing an afternoon of fun and learning for children at the Pigeon Community Center.  Transportation to areas involving our club members is provided by HCC vans with club officials attending each event.

The Volunteers Club has not only accomplished many things, but also has fun with doing the projects.  Hopefully we can plan a fun event soon after classes begin in the fall as a “Welcome to HCC.”  We invite all students to come to our meetings and join our organization for some of the most fulfilling experiences of your college life.

Elections are held in April with new officers being installed the first of May for one year.  Meetings are determined at the beginning of each semester with student class schedules in mind.  We are now meeting every Monday at 11:30 in the Sunrise Café.
